What is the RO filter replacement schedule at a glance?

How do you identify each RO stage?
Do not trust “stage 3” or “stage 4” alone. Photograph the tubing before disassembly, record the model number, read each cartridge label, and trace the water path: feed valve → sediment → carbon → membrane housing → tank → polishing cartridge → faucet. Quick-change systems may combine several steps.

When should the sediment, carbon and membrane stages be replaced?
Sediment and carbon prefilters
Sediment cartridges are sacrificial: replace them when loading causes a sustained pressure or flow loss, or when the manual’s interval arrives. Carbon is also membrane protection. One official Pentek manual warns that chlorine can damage its membrane and specifies frequent carbon replacement for that model. Testing the water after the carbon stage is more informative than guessing from color alone.
RO membrane
A membrane is overdue when dissolved-ion rejection declines consistently under comparable feed TDS, temperature and pressure, after fresh prefilters and normal tank operation are confirmed. NSF/ANSI 58 covers TDS-reduction performance, but a handheld TDS reading does not prove microbiological safety or reduction of every contaminant.
Post-carbon and optional stages
Post-carbon can cause stale taste or downstream restriction without changing membrane rejection. Remineralization, alkaline and specialty cartridges should be changed by their own capacity or manual—not automatically whenever the membrane is replaced.
How do you change and sanitize RO filters safely?
Check the system manual before opening any housing. CDC advises maintaining filters and changing them on the manufacturer’s schedule, using gloves and washing hands afterward. Do not touch membrane surfaces or cartridge ends that contact treated water.
- Shut off the cold-water feed.
- Close the storage-tank valve and any icemaker branch.
- Open the RO faucet until pressure and flow stop.
- Remove old cartridges with clean hands or gloves; keep stages organized.
- Wash and rinse housings as the manual permits; keep electronics dry.
- Inspect O-rings for nicks, flattening or cracks. Replace damaged seals and use only approved lubricant.
- Sanitize using the exact product, concentration, contact time and empty-housing sequence in the applicable manual. Do not improvise.
- Install filters in the correct direction and order.
- Open the feed valve slowly and repressurize.
- Check every housing, fitting and tube for leaks immediately and again after the tank fills.
- Flush and discard the manual-specified water before drinking.
How long should new filters and membranes be flushed?
Flushing times vary sharply. One Pentair manual requires two to eight hours after membrane installation; another official manual uses a three-hour drain followed by a full tank fill and discard.

Low flow may come from low feed pressure, cold water, a closed valve, depleted tank air charge, kinked tubing, a blocked drain-flow controller, or a cartridge installed backward. Fix or measure those conditions before buying a membrane.

Can all RO filters be changed at once?
Yes when the manual or service history supports it, but the membrane often lasts longer than prefilters. Replacing every stage automatically can waste a usable membrane.
How do I know the membrane is bad?

Does low flow always mean a failed membrane?
