What Is Hard Water, Exactly?
It’s water carrying dissolved minerals it collected on the way to your tap. The more it picks up, the harder the water. GPG (grains per gallon) is the American softener-industry unit. The conversion is one step: 1 GPG = 17.1 mg/L, so divide mg/L by 17.1 to get GPG, or multiply GPG by 17.1 to go the other way. What Is Limescale, and How Does It Form?
Limescale is hardness made visible. That’s the crust on your kettle element, the ring in the shower, the white spots on glasses. How Much Does Hard Water Cost You?

When Is a Softener Justified — and When Is It Overkill?
The honest answer is that it depends on your number and your appliances, and plenty of households don’t need one.
